What is tan?

Tanning is the skin response to solar radiation, characterized by a natural darkening due to increased melanin. It is actually a self-defense mechanism against solar aggression.

What is melanin?

Is the natural pigment found in skin, hair, iris, which helps protect against the sun.

Melanin in the skin is responsible for the color brown. Its production increases naturally with sun exposure to protect the body from excess radiation (prevents most harmful solar radiation to penetrate the skin). Are the ultraviolet rays UVA and UVB, which stimulates pigment production in melanocytes (special cells in the epidermis). .

How do we tan in the sun?

Invisible spectrum of solar light (infrared and ultraviolet) are ultraviolet which have an important biological effect on humans.

UVA rays cause a quick and direct pigmentation of the skin within minutes of sun exposure, which is due to darkening of existing melanin granules. Penetrate into deeper levels of the dermis and are responsible for skin aging, increase the possibility of recurrence of skin cancer and malignant melanoma.

The long lasting tan is a slower process that is due to UVB. These stimulate the production of melanin, in excess, resulting in inflammation and even burns (are responsible for sunburn).

UVC rays are very dangerous but not cause a strong effect bed heat. Are retained by the ozone layer, so the decrease of the same is very dangerous for human health.

All ultraviolet rays can alter the genetic information generated skin cancers. It is therefore necessary to take the sun very sparingly.

Can you damage the sun?

A tanned skin does not always mean healthy skin. The abuse of the sun can cause immediate or disorders later in life.

These side effects depend, among other things, the amount and type of ultraviolet radiation received, the duration and frequency of exposure and sensitivity of the skin (phototype).

The effects of the sun are cumulative, therefore dangerous.

The main risks of sunbathing without precautions are:

  • Sunburn
  • Skin spots
  • Accelerated-aging skin dehydration and wrinkling
  • Sensitive and delicate skin

"I like to keep brown What UVA cabin and self-tanners?

The desire for a quick tan sometimes makes use of UV tanning or self-tanners. The mode of action and type of pigment produced are totally different.

From a medical standpoint, the use of UV lamps is strongly discouraged for the general public and more in order to increase the bed, except for some specific dermatological problems (vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema certain) that can benefit from this type prescription treatment and control of qualified professionals.

Always remember before using these types of booths that emitted UVA rays can cause burns like the sun, accelerated skin aging and increased risk of developing skin cancer.

The self-tanning products are just that color the skin without any relation with the melanin. Therefore, the dark color is achieved with self-tanners NO protects against solar radiation and that there will be an increase in melanin. The "tan" in this case is due to self-tanning reaction to certain proteins in the skin staining.

"The sun will burn the skin less if we care for our food?

Can interfere in some way I'm taking medication?

It is true that there are drugs that cause photosensitivity (contraceptives, St. John's wort preparations, hormones, certain antibiotics, cancer chemotherapy, etc.) And risk of hyperpigmentation (dark spots on the skin). In all these cases requires the use of a sunscreen extreme.

Commonly used zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and mica. Especially recommended for people with sensitive skin and children.

Chemical filters: let through ultraviolet solar radiation through the skin, absorb and transform the harmful wavelength a completely harmless to skin. Some of the used are para-amino benzoic acid, sulfonic acid, camphor, benzophenone and dibenzoylmethane.

Sunscreens usually have a combination of the two types of sunscreen.

What skin types are there?

The Fitzpatrick classification is made depending on the intensity of the response to sun, 6 phototypes detailed below:

Phototype 1: fair-skinned redheads (almost albino) with lots of freckles, skin sensitive to allergic reaction to sun and intense erythema, which always burns and never tans (have great scaling in the sun).

Phototype 2: light eyes and blond also clear skin, freckles, skin is sensitive and reacts to the sun with erythema and scaling, but less intense than those of phototype 1.Se tan, but little.

  • Apply to dry skin in even layer, leaving no bare spots. Reapply every 2 hours in the sun and every time you leave the bathroom.
  • Dry skin, leaving the water because wet skin is more permeable to ultraviolet rays, and also the drops of water can act as a magnifying glass and cause burns or skin.
  • Avoid the midday sun, between 11 am and 16 pm, when ultraviolet radiation is most intense. Use sunscreen even on cloudy days because the rays penetrate clouds.
  • Drink water or nonalcoholic fluids in abundance to maintain good hydration.
  • "If you're going to spend much time in the sun hat and protective clothing used color clearly. Do not forget the sunglasses.
